Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
